چکیده

Reproductive traits were measured for 234 bulls and 1184 heifers from matings of three dam breeds (Angus, Hereford, and MARC III) with six sire breeds (Angus, Hereford, Brahman, Boran, Tuli, and Belgian Blue) from the Germ Plasm Evaluation (GPE) Program at Roman L. Hruska US Meat Animal Research Center. Male traits were yearling scrotal circumference (YSC), height (YH), and yearling BW; age at puberty (AP1; production of 50 million sperm with ≥10% progressive motility); age, scrotal circumference, average testis length, and testicular volume when 500 million sperm were produced with ≥50% progressive motility (AP3, SC3, L3 and V3, respectively); and 15-mo BW (15W) and height (15H). Traits of females were age at puberty (AP, first estrus) and pregnancy rate (PR) at 18 mo. The objective was to determine whether indirect selection on male traits would be effective for improving female fertility traits. Selection of males on AP1, AP3, SC3, L3, V3, YH, 15W, and 15H may be useful for 1Published as paper no. 14841, Journal Series, Nebraska Agric. Res. Although no male trait was found to be effective for improving AP in females through indirect selection, YSC and SC3 were the most favorable. If heritability were as large as estimated in this study for AP (0.52), direct rather than indirect selection would seem to be more effective for AP in heifers, although the difficulty of measuring AP in heifers also would need to be considered. Male reproductive traits, such as scrotal circumference and also YH and 15H, however, are easier and less expensive to measure than female reproductive traits, and greater selection intensity can be applied to these male traits. Genetics and genomics of reproductive performance in dairy and beef cattle.

Excellent reproductive performance in both males and females is fundamental to profitable dairy and beef production systems. In this review we undertook a meta-analysis of genetic parameters for female reproductive performance across 55 dairy studies or populations and 12 beef studies or populations as well as across 28 different studies or populations for male reproductive performance. A pleth...

G enetic relationships between calving date, calving interval, age at first calving and type traits in beef cattle

In this paper the genetic relationships between major reproductive traits in beef cattle (Calving Date, Calving Interval and Age at First Calving) and type traits have been estimated to evaluate the usefulness of type classification in predicting reproductive performance in beef cattle. We estimated favourable genetic correlations between Calving Interval and type traits ranging from 2 0.027 to...

This study was undertaken to estimate the genetic parameters for some reproduction traits in Sistani beef cattle. The data set consisted of 1489 records of number of insemination, calving, and insemination dates in different calving was used. Reproduction traits including calving interval (CI), gestation length (GL), days open (DO), calving to first service (CTFS), first service to conception (...

Variance component estimation on female fertility traits in beef cattle

The purpose of this review is to define possible breeding objectives for Southern African beef cattle farmers and to review different means of expressing genetic reproductive merit. The breeding objective considered was to maximize the number of calves born or weaned for a given number of cows in a herd under prevailing environmental and management conditions. This is a complex trait that has m...

Genetic parameters for growth, reproductive performance, calving ease and suckling performance in beef cattle heifers

There is considerable concern about the consequences on fitness-related traits of using narrow breeding objectives for production traits. The aim of this study was to assess the potential consequences of selection for growth in French beef cattle breeds by estimating genetic correlations between growth, reproduction, calving and suckling traits of Charolais, Limousin and Blonde d’Aquitaine heif...
